BARACK OBAMA WHO IS HE? • Barack Obama Jr. was born to Barack Obama Sr. and Ann Durham in Hawaii on August 4, 1961. • His father was born and raised in a small village in Kenya, where he herded goats. • His mother grew up in a small town in Kansas. • His parents met while attending the University of Hawaii. • Obama Sr. eventually returned to Kenya and left Barack Jr. and his mother in Hawaii. • Barack and his mother also lived in Indonesia for several years. • In 1983 Barack Obama graduated from Columbia University in New York. • After a move to Chicago in 1985, Barack Obama became a community organizer who wanted to improve the living conditions of poor neighborhoods plagues with crime and high unemployment. Unsatisfied with the minimal success of this campaign, Mr. Obama realized a change in our law and policies was the only way to truly improve the lives of people in similar communities across the nation. • The first African American president of the Harvard Law Review, he earned a law degree from Harvard in 1991. • He later returned to Chicago to practice law as a Civil Rights Lawyer and teach Constitutional Law. • He served on the Illinois State Senate for 8 years. • He became the 3rd African American since Reconstruction to be elected to the US state Senate in 2004. • It is obvious that growing up in different places with people who had differing ideas, has truly animated Senator Barack Obama's political journey. • Mr. Obama believes that the ability to unite people ...
